WINTER PARK, FL – Artist John Carollo will bring his one-day Watercolor Workshop back to Crealde School of Art on March 6, 2027, with a new twist. Titled “Collaborating with Watercolor: The Human Figure,” the class will focus on how the watercolor medium can often have a mind of its own and a tendency to assert its independence at every opportunity, but rather than fight with it, a collaborative approach where both artist and paint share control helps unlock unique atmospheric and transparency effects. Students will then apply the approach to creating expressive impressions of one of the most interesting of subjects – the human figure. Through demonstrations and discussion, students will discover the surprising, therapeutic results they can achieve by letting the flow of the paint take the lead.

John has an extensive backround creating impressions of figures through watercolor, including his time as the Resident Artist of Voci Modern Dance Company and the traveling show consisting entirely of human figures, The Figure as Vehicle, which he and Marsha De Broske developed and toured with.

The theme of the workshop was inspired by how often John hears comments from people about how “hard,” “unforgiving,” and “frustrating” the medium can be, cleverly summed up in the famous response to a question by Impressionist artist Edgar Degas:

…when asked by a woman what kind of watercolors she should buy her son, his reply was that she would be safer buying the child a revolver.

Following the lead of the flowing paint, an approach John uses extensively in his distinctive Controlled Chaos painting style, can be freeing, therapeutic, and a lot of fun. Students will be encouraged to try new techniques and develop their own through trial and error which may open possibilities they may not have previously considered.

A sampling of the positive feedback John received from the Fall 2025 debut of the workshop is below, and the artist looks forward to engaging with students again this Spring.

“I enjoyed your workshop on Sunday and would register for another workshop or class with you at Crealde. Your artwork is wonderful and your teaching very kind and supportive.”

“Thank your so much for teaching the class and for all of the helpful info. from it! I learned a lot and had more fun than I expected to. I’ve been incorporating some of what I learned in my own watercolor practice and I’m really happy with the results. It’s definitely different than I would have done before.”

“This was great. Thank you so much! What an incredibly challenging day.“

After an over three-year process, in partnership with Orange County and Lee Road Safe Neighborhood, both designs created by artist John Carollo to add roadside beautification to traffic control boxes in the area are now installed. The first, located at the intersection of Lee Rd. and Diplomat Circle, in North Orlando, just outside the boundary of the City of Winter Park, FL, is a composite image, created by the artist, based on his 13 x 16 foot hand-painted silk and aluminum sculpture, Icarus Ascends.

The vibrant colors really help to enhance what was a pretty bleak intersection and John is always pleased to add a bit of color and beauty to the world wherever he can.

The second box created by the artist, located at the intersection of Wymore Rd and Fairbanks Avenue, features a composite image of the three paintings – Eye of the Storm and Duality 1 and 2.

Of similar quality to art magnets available from museum gift shops, the initial batch includes 2″x3″ reproductions of the pieces Dance Study I, Eye of the Storm, and Lake Eola – Rain, all of which where showcased in local media in the past. More prints of other pieces will be added in the future.

These magnets are a fun, inexpensive way to add a bit of Carollo’s distinctive Controlled Chaos artistic flair to any metal surface, and also make a great gift.

instruction of the internationally renowned artist Rob Erdle. Having initially approached the medium with a goal of producing realistic works, a summer study trip to Europe quickly cured those impulses. During the course of the journey, and continuing upon his return, John’s work took on an increasingly expressive, stylistic flair, meant to convey the mood, emotion, and essence of a scene rather than a literal interpretation of what the eyes might be recording. His loose, free-flowing style allows the water and paint to often move on its own with minor guidance, in a technique he calls Controlled Chaos. The end result showcases watercolor’s unique properties of translucency and atmospheric effect.

In both 2007 and 2012 he was awarded prestigious United Arts of Central Florida Artist Development Grants, for his work with large-scale watercolor (over 6’) and 3D kinetic sculpture. The latter area has been a continuing source of exploration for the artist, with his work evolving from shaped paper and wire constructions to very large suspended pieces created from hand-painted silk, twisted aluminum and stainless steel. The largest of these to date at over 13’ x 16’, Icarus Ascends, premiered in 2013 and was designed for expansive atrium and transit center public art spaces.

Beginning in 2010, much of John’s creative energy has gone into The Figure As Vehicle, a travelling two-person collaborative exhibition with sculptor Marsha De Broske. Containing nearly 50 works by the two artists, all featuring the human figure in various interpretations, the show portrays the body as a vehicle for conveying messages to the viewer through mood, contemplation, personal connection and understanding. Ever-changing, the project highlights both artists’ ability to capture the essence of motion in their work, and has to-date been shown six times throughout Florida and Georgia at galleries, colleges and centers for the arts.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious juried outdoor art festivals, consistently rated among the top shows by Sunshine Artist and American Style magazines. In 2013 and 2014 it was voted America’s Best Juried Fine Art Fair by Art Fair Calendar.com readers. Each year more than 350,000 visitors enjoy the show.

Every year about 1,100 artists from around the world applied for entry and an independent panel of judges selected 225 national and international artists to attend the show. The National Endowment for the Arts, The White House, Congress and many others have lauded the Festival for promoting art and art education in Central Florida. An all volunteer board of directors runs the annual Festival, now celebrating its 55th year.

The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival was started by a handful of enthusiasts as a community project to benefit local artists and art lovers. The first festival was held on Park Avenue in March 1960. The festival featured original works of art and, after being advertised for just three weeks before the opening, drew 90 exhibiting artists. Over the next decade, the festival grew to over 600 artists and was spread out over Park Avenue from Fairbanks Avenue to Canton Avenue and on all cross streets. For the past 30 years or so, the festival has been contained solely in the park area and currently features 225 artists and 3 emerging artists. A loving art community has created and nurtured a successful festival that looks forward to another 50 years in Central Park.
